off the leash (mentally and physically)

If you’re a dog owner, you likely take your dog out a few times a day, everyday. So… have a think to yourself, are you making the most of it?

I always acknowledge the fact that taking my dog a walk is of course a necessity, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. It is a time you and your dog should be able to enjoy together, and who knows- you might find it is your favourite part of your day.

To your dog, their walk is the most exhilarating, stimulating, and enjoyable time. They need it for more than just exercise, they also need to sniff and explore the outside world (more than just the inside of your lovely home).

In this case, shouldn’t we be making sure that every walk counts? And shouldn’t we be making them as enjoyable as possible, if not for you, then definitely for your dog!

So, let’s go over some top issues when walking your dog (that you lovely readers have let me know about) and tackle them with some solutions.

1.     WEATHER! Yes, we certainly don’t always love the rain or the cold. However, your dog still needs a walk so we need to find ways around it. First, INVEST IN A *good* COAT, and maybe even get one for your dog too if you think it is something that would benefit them. This will make you less wet and miserable and not mind the walk quite so much, and don’t forget your wellies! I always find it helps to go with a friend so you can run about in the rain together (and gives your dog that chance too). After all, it tends to take your mind off things.

2.     OTHER DOGS/ PEOPLE! There’s nothing worse than your walk being disturbed by a fellow dog walker letting their untrained pup loose to rile and upset your own, or the anxiety of your dog getting hurt. The general rule of thumb is to ensure your dog is well trained before you give them the freedom off the leash. Know that they will come back to you when you call and won’t go after other dogs. If you’re unsure of the behaviour of another dog off the leash, keep yours on and walk away. The dog may have been no threat, but it isn’t a risk you should ever be willing to take.

3.     MY DOG IS A NUSANCE ON A WALK! Does your dog have poor recall? Do they pull when on the lead? Do they eat everything in sight? These highlight areas of required training that will allow you some peace of mind on a walk. Watch some YouTube tutorials and be consistent. If you need further assistance, there are always professional trainers!

(Here is an example of Clover being a little *darling* on our walk)

4.     THERE ARE NO GOOD DOG PARKS NEAR ME! This can be a particular problem when you don’t have access to a car. There are ways around it however! I personally joined several dog walking groups on Facebook with some great suggestions of places to go. You could always try your dog on public transport as well if you feel a different park would benefit them. But try not overthink it, if it is semi-secure, has grass, and is a safe place- your dog will likely enjoy it!

Hopefully these wee points help you out if you’re finding your dog walks a bit of a chore, but please let us know down below if you have any other suggestions- Clover and I would love to hear them!
