 let's get outta here- vacationing with your dog anyone?


When life gets you down- it isn't uncommon for you to feel the need to escape! But for us dog owners, the dog-mum guilt gets REAL! 

Sure, it isn't very appealing or simple to imagine taking your dog to a 4 star holiday resort in Turkey, but there are plenty of holidays for you and your pet for when you do want to take your dog away with you.

Personally, Clover and I have been on a good number of vacations together since I got her. Especially in the era of the Covid-19 Pandemic, staycations became all the rage! Seeing as we were booking a staycation, I couldn't come up with many reasons not to take Clover. When researching online, there were plenty of dog friendly accommodations so it ended up being a very easy process to organise.



As always, we have compiled some top tips for planning a trip away with your dog!

  1. Consider how far you want to go! Usually travelling by car is the way to go, but the further away you choose to go, the longer your dog will have to spend in a car they're not used to. Gauge your dog's tolerance of car travel to determine this. If you are travelling by ferry to go abroad, make sure you make lots of stops while on the road to let your dog relieve themselves so that their journey is comfortable.
  2. Find a good dog friendly accommodation! There are plenty of ways to find good dog friendly places, simply start with a google search! I always read reviews first to double check this is correct and that other people's dogs had a good time! You can also use websites such as booking.com and apply a filter to your search to only show dog friendly places. 
  3. Plan some activities before you go! It is important to have a rough ideas of places to take your dog, activities they can join in, and of course good dog walks in the local area! By doing so, you cut out the stress of finding these things last minute. It also means your dog will have some fun things planned for them as well.
  4. Pack for your dog too! Sure your dog won't need several outfits and a toothbrush but you'll need to make sure you bring things they will need. We would recommend: 
  • their bed- they need somewhere to sleep!
  • a blanket- something that smells like home to keep them calm
  • some toys- to keep them entertained
  • their food bowl- to supply the goods
  • a water bottle- big hikes mean hydration is key!
  • their food- a gal's got to eat!
  • collar/leash/harness- can't go anywhere without!
  • dog car accessories - your dog *must* be kept secure on long drives
Et voila! The ingredients list for the perfect trip away with your dog.

Personally, I would recommend visiting a national park of some sort and definitely a place with a beach! Your dog will thank you later!

Anstruther/Crail:
Very dog friendly! Loads of amazing dog walks and loads of dog friendly venues! We stayed in a caravan park here which was very central, and we had the Fife Coastal Path on our doorstep.

Loch Lomond: By far Clover's Favourite expedition! We stayed in a lodge across the road from the Duck Bay, called Auchendennan Farm. Clover had the best time in the woods, water and beyond and once again, there were so many places for us to eat that she could tag along too.

just an inch off the end- PLEASE!

Groomers. You either love them or you fear them with all your life. Maybe you're lucky and your pup doesn't need anything more than a nail clip and a bath. However, for a lot of pups, the transformation from a groom can completely change the appearance of your dog- so it's important that you take them somewhere you trust. Now I won't lie- Clover has had some BELTERS of a groom, ones I can't even look her in the eye because I know she hates me type of grooms but we have learned our lesson well. Clover is a Cockapoo, meaning she is half poodle, half cocker spaniel. According to the internet, I was recommended to brush her coat every day and to have her properly trimmed every few weeks (either by myself or a professional).
